The Unicorn School

In March 2019 we opened the school with two locally hired teachers and a cleaning person (many of the students had never used an indoor washroom nor a faucet). Currently between 30 and 60 children attend the school. With donations from our friends in Spain, we built desks, painted walls, added wall displays, and installed carpets to protect against the cold earth floor. We were able to purchase an electronic charging station to compensate for frequent power outages, paper, chalkboard, and chalk tablets for the children. Whenever we have enough money we hire a local mother to cook dal and rice for the kids at the school and for the residents of the village.

We have received great cooperation from a few of the local physicians as well as several Ayurvedic practitioners. We conduct dental hygiene day and physical check-up days for parents and children. The daily schedule of classes includes the basic curriculum along with teaching compassion and wisdom. One day last year, donations allowed us to take about 30 children to Bodhgaya for a field trip and a restaurant meal. This was the first trip to Bodhgaya for many of them.
