Unicorn Project Update

Greetings to all of you! As you may have noticed, I’ve been taking a bit of a break over the past few months but the Unicorn Project has continued its activities and I’d like to bring you up-to-date about the progress we’ve made.

After completing our bamboo and straw school, we began building a brick enclosure to keep out vandals and thieves from stealing the school equipment. The enclosure eventually will provide the basic foundation for the school building and we will slowly add to this as we move forward.

The brick enclosure has been a huge undertaking by the Unicorn Project. The volunteers worked hard to ensure that the construction material was ordered and delivered to the site as well as to feed the construction workers. The weather was extremely hot during this time, and later the monsoon season arrived bringing with it heavy rains and floods.

We have started fundraising to install toilet facilities and will eventually add brick interior walls with a metal roof. Until we reach that point, we will be happy with our grass roof.

You can see the amount of work that your donation has generated for the local economy. The workers are given a fair wage, above the norm, and are provided food and water. They enjoyed working on this project and their families were happy for the dollars earned. The work that has been completed so far cost us less than $10,000 CAD. Our next big goals are to complete the toilet facilities, and then build more permanent interior walls and roof.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Edwina Claire Molloy (aka SMILEY QUEEN) from the United Kingdom. Edwina has raised money for a water pump and will be holding fundraisers based out of Great Britain. We thank Edwina for her generosity.

Hilda, our friend from Spain, has forwarded a generous donation from fundraising that she has done in that country.

The school held Independence Day flag-raising celebrations with some of the kids on August 15 and we are scheduled to open for classes in September.

Over the past month our focus has been on feeding the poor. We hold regular soup kitchens and continue to give bags of basics to the villagers. Each bag holds enough food (potatoes, rice, legumes, toiletries etc) that should last for two weeks. You can see the thankfulness of the villagers.

The high schools are now open and we are hopeful that the elementary children will be allowed to start soon. Our teachers are as eager as the children. We need so much that it is hard to prioritize. The villagers and children need food, but also need an education to break away from the life of poverty. We are running on a shoestring budget and the shoestring is almost worn through, with many knots. Please support us . . . 100 % goes to the kids.

The school children are loving the time they spend at school. It really gives them a sense of purpose. We really need to install a proper toilet and drain field septic system. It will cost $2500-$3000. Whatever small contribution you can give really helps us out.
